Pegula Saves Three MPs to Advance

Jessica Pegula showed nerves of steel as she saved three match points in the deciding set tiebreak to edge out Elena Rybakina in a thrilling second-round contest on Wednesday.

The American was outplayed by the Wimbledon champion in the first set, and was also broken in the very first game of the second, but she came back well to tie the match at one set all.

The third set saw the world no. 5 break early, but Rybakina got the break back and the set eventually went into the tiebreak. It was a nail-biting finish as the Kazakh built a 4-6 lead, but a determined Pegula refused to give up and drew level at 6-6. Rybakina had another match point at 6-7, but Pegula saved that as well to stay alive. Eventually, the American won the last two points to clinch the thriller.

Pegula is now eyeing a fifth consecutive quarterfinal. In her last four tournaments, she finished in the final four in Toronto, the last eight in Cincinnati, the U.S. Open, and the semifinals in San Diego.

Overall she is 39-18. She was consistent in the early part of the season as well, also reaching the last eight at the Australian Open and the french open and the semifinals in Miami. But her best this year was a run to her fourth career final in Madrid, where she couldn’t add to the only title that she won in Washington in 2019.

After her gutsy display in the second round, can Pegula topple another battle-hardened player on Thursday?

Andreescu Knocks Out Kvitova

Bianca Andreescu rallied from a set down to defeat Petra Kvitova in the second round on Wednesday.

The Canadian got off to a slow start but got better as the match progressed and completely outplayed the Czech player in the final set to register a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Ranked no. 59th in the world, the 22-year-old Canadian was edged out by Kvitova in a closely contested first set. Kvitova went up a break in the fourth game, but Andreescu broke back immediately, only to be broken again in the very next game. There were no more breaks of serve in the first set as Kvitova went on to close out the first set.

The Czech didn’t hold serve again in the match, dropping all four service games in the second set and three in the third as Andreescu cruised to victory.

The Canadian had won her opening round match against Jil Teichmann, beating the Swiss 6-2, 6-4.

With the win, the 2019 U.S. Open champion has improved her injury-hit season record to 19-11, and she is 7-4 on hard courts. Her best this year was a runner-up finish in Bad Homburg, and she has reached just one more quarterfinal besides that, which was in Rome. Can she continue her solid run in the tournament with a third consecutive win on Thursday?

Pegula v Andreescu Prediction and Tip

Expect this one to be a real close affair. While Pegula’s consistency and form make her the favourite, she will be stretched again. However, she should emerge victorious in the end.
