David Goffin v Richard Gasquet Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Goffin leads their head to head series by three matches to one.

Goffin won their first match in Japan in 2017, but Gasquet was victorious in Montpellier a year later.

The Belgian, though, won both their matches in 2019, at the Masters events in Cincinnati and Shanghai.

Goffin Maintains Local Interest

Goffin had been made to work very hard by the Belgian wildcard, Gilles Arnaud Bailly, in the first round, and it took him three sets to get the better of a man ranked more than 1,100 places below him.

He had no such problems, though, against the number three seed, and world number 19, Diego Schwartzman, on Thursday night.

The Argentine was under pressure on serve from the start and was broken in the third game of the match. He managed to recover the break immediately and he held on for the tie-break, though not without have to stave off more threats from the Belgian.

Goffin, though, comfortably won the tie break.

There was no respite for Schwartzman in the second set and it was not long before he was broken again.  This time Goffin did not let him off the hook and celebrated in style with another break to win the match, and ensure home interest in the quarter-final.

Gasquet Demonstrates His Fighting Qualities

Gasquet is now entering the veteran stage of a long career that has brought him 15 senior titles, the last of which was in Rosmalen four years ago.

He proved he can still perform at the highest level by reaching the semi-finals in Winston Salem and the third round of the US Open, and there has been more evidence of that in Antwerp this week.

In the first round he was three match points down against Stan Wawrinka, but still managed to battle back to win.

He was given another tough test by the Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker in their second round clash as well.

The first set saw the momentum swing first one way and then the other, Gasquet dropping his serve, only to immediately break back.

Both had mini-break advantages at one stage in the subsequent tie-break, before Gasquet claimed the set.

There was no let up in the intensity in the second set, which began with Stricker dropping his serve.

Break points came and went for both men until Gasquet was  broken in turn.

But he bided his time, broke Stricker again to love, and, despite the Swiss attempting another fightback, managed to serve out eventually.

Goffin v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

The odds seemed stacked in favour of Goffin. He is playing in front of his home crowd, has the better head to head record, and is the younger man.
