A quarterfinalist in Florence last week, Mackenzie McDonald has reached the last eight in Naples as well, after upsetting the third seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round on Thursday.
The 27-year-old American was down a break early in both the sets against the Spaniard but he bounced back with a double break in both to register a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
McDonald won 70% points on the first serve and struck 31 winners in the match, 15 more than the World no. 22.
The World no. 76 McDonald, who is 26-28 overall and 19-18 on hard courts, had beaten Italy’s Francesco Passaro 6-3, 7-5 in the first round.
This is the third quarterfinal that he has reached in the last four tournaments. The 2021 Washington Open runner-up has not made it to the semis this year. Can he do it in Naples in what will be his fourth quarterfinal of the season?

Zhang Upsets Baez
Qualifier Zhizhen Zhang upset the sixth seed Sebastian Baez to reach the last eight in Naples.
The Chinese player has displayed great form at the Challenger level this year, reaching four finals and winning one of them.
He seems to have carried that form to the top level. He qualified for the main draw in Astana and defeated Aslan Karatsev in the first round before going down in the second. He featured in the main draw in Florence as well, but couldn’t win the first round after entering the tournament as lucky loser.
He is now playing in the main draw for the third consecutive week and this has by far been his best performance. After coming through the qualifiers with back-to-back wins over Italians Riccardo Bonadio and Giulio Zeppieri respectively, he knocked out Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).
He continued the winning run on Thursday, knocking out Baez in a two-hour-and-seven-minute contest. Although it was a straight sets win, both the sets were decided in the tiebreak, with the world no. 109 Zhang battling past the world no. 37, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (13-11). Can he keep

McDonald’s got more experience at this level and he has been in good form over the last few weeks, so he will be the favourite. Zhang has shown great resolve in the four matches in Naples, so he won’t go down easily. Expect McDonald to win but the match may go the distance.
