Korda Trounces Nishioka

Last year’s Gijon finalist Sebastian Korda is going strong this week as well and the 22-year-old is now a win away from reaching consecutive finals.

Korda displayed terrific form on Friday as he dispatched Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-2 in just 53 minutes.

The American did not face a single break point in the match while he converted 5 of 6 during the one-sided quarterfinal. He also struck 31 winners and served 8 aces, while winning 92% points on the back of his first serve.

The world no. 36 improved to 11-3 on indoor courts this year. Last week, he had reached the third third final of his career and first of the season in Gijon but he couldn’t add to his solitary tour-level title after he went down to Andrey Rublev.

Korda had begun his Antwerp campaign with a three-set win over compatriot Marcos Giron. He then knocked out the fourth seed Karen Khachenov 7-5, 7-6 (11-9) in the second round.

Can he reach a second final in a row?

Thiem Saves Three MPs, Ousts the Top Seed

A determined Dominic Thiem came back from a set down and saved three match points before taking down the top seed Hubert Hurkacz in a dramatic three-set quarterfinal in Antwerp on Friday.

After conceding the only break of the first set in the second game, Thiem missed out on a break point opportunity in the ninth game, allowing Hurkacz to take a one-set-to-love lead.

In the second set, the Austrian showed nerves of steel as he saved three match points in the tiebreak, before getting his nose in front and tying the match at one-set apiece.

Just like the second set, neither player was broken in the third and it too needed a tiebreak to separate the two. This time Thiem built a sizeable 6-2 lead and didn’t make a mistake on his serve to close out the two-hour-and-56-minute contest 3-6, 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-4).

It’s been two excellent weeks for the resurgent Thiem, who is climbing back up the rankings. He was a semifinalist in Gijon last week and is back in the final four in Antwerp this week.

The 17-time tour-level champion, who last won a title at the U.S. Open in 2020 and reached his last final at the ATP Finals the same year, is looking to reach a 29th final.

The 29-year-old, who was also a finalist on indoor surface in Rennes last month is 12-4 from all indoor matches he has played this year.

Thiem had also won his second round match in three sets against Francisco Cerundolo. He had an easy start to the tournament though, as he breezed past Michael Geerts in straight sets.

Korda v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Both players are in great form and it’s hard to pick a winner. What goes in Korda’s favour is that he won his quarterfinal in no time and will be very fresh for the match.

What goes in Thiem’s favour is that he has shown great resolve in taking down the top seed. Expect a thriller, with Thiem using all his experience to end his finals drought.
