After starting off with a comfortable win over Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round on Thursday, second seed and home favourite Mateo Berrettini eased past Taro Daniel in the quarterfinal on Friday.
In what turned out to be a dominant performance by the Italian, Berrettini struck seven aces and 36 winners on his way to a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
The world no. 16 didn’t face a single break point while he broke the Japanese twice in both the sets to complete the win in just an hour and 24 minutes.
Berrettini, who received a first-round bye, wasn’t broken in the second round either, as he cruised past Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-2. The Spaniard had shocked Berrettini, in what was the Italian’s opening round match in Florence last week. But the Italian got his revenge this week and is looking in dangerous form.
A seven-time champion on the tour, he has now improved his season record to 31-11. On Saturday, Berrettini will look to reach a fourth final of the season. He was a champion in Stuttgart and Queen’s and a runner-up in Gstaad. Can he reach a 12th career final on Saturday?

McDonald Rallies Past Zhang
World no. 74 Mackenzie McDonald fought back from a set down to end Chinese qualifier Zhizhen Zhang’s solid run in the tournament in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The win kept Mcdonald’s chances of winning a maiden title alive. He had reached his only tour-level final in Washington last year, but had finished runner-up in that tournament.
The American is now a win away from reaching a second career final. McDonald conceded the only break of the first set in the fifth game to allow the world no. 109 take the first set. He however bounced back with a solitary break in the second and then raced to victory in the final set with a double break.
The one hour and 55 minute contest saw McDonald serve 10 aces, save 7 of 8 break points and convert 3 of 7 on his way to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
He had begun his Naples campaign with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Francesco Passaro in the opening round and then knocked out third seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 6-4 in round 2.
This is the first time that he will be playing in a semifinal this year. Can he make it to the final?
Berrettini v McDonald Prediction and Tip
Berrettini has been far more consistent than McDonald this season. He is also looked in great touch and a home favourite. Expect him to cruise into the final.
