Auger-Aliassime Fends Off Evans

Last week’s Florence Open champion Felix Auger-Aliassime is charging towards another final this week in Antwerp.

The world no. 10 edged past Dan Evans in a two-hour-and-41-minute contest on Friday to reach the semifinals of the European Open. The Canadian lost the first set after Evans got the only break of the set in the third game, but Auger-Aliassime bounced back by winning the second set in the tiebreak.

He was in complete control of the final set and broke the Briton twice to clinch the contest 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Auger-Aliassime, who defeated J.J. Wolf in the Florence final last week, had begun his Antwerp campaign with a 6-3, 603 drubbing of Manuel Guinard.

It’s been the best year for the 22-year-old’s career so far and a 47-25 season is a testament of that. Auger-Aliassime will be looking to reach a fourth final of the year on Saturday. He won his maiden title in Rotterdam and finished runner-up in Marseille before claiming a second title of his career in Florence. He had come into the season with a 0-8 record in finals, but after securing two titles he is gaining in confidence and there could be a third coming his way over the weekend.

Gasquet Ends Goffin’s Challenge

2016 Antwerp champion is within two matches of lifting a second title in the Belgian city. The 36-year-old ousted David Goffin in straight sets on Friday to book a place in the semifinals.

Gasquet wasn’t broken in the quarterfinal match as he saved all six of the break points that Goffin held in the match. In contrast, the Frenchman broke his opponent twice in the first set and edged the second set tiebreak for a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory in an hour and 54 minutes.

This was the third straight match when Gasquet had to deal with a tiebreak and he came out on top. Gasquet had saved three match points in the opening round comeback win over Stan Wawrinka, as he defeated the Swiss 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. In the second round, the world no. 82 defeated Dominic Stricker 7-6 (8-6), 7-5.

A 15-time champion on the tour, Gasquet is looking to reach a 33rd final and a first since his runner-up finish in Umag last year. This is only the second time on the tour that he has reached the final four stage in 2022. Can the world no. 82 pull off a surprise on Saturday.
