Maria Sakkari earned the last ticket to the WTA Finals after beating Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 on Friday evening. It was a well-deserved victory for the Greek, who has been absolutely phenomenal this season (36-21).
She cracked the top 10 in the rankings and peaked at #3 before landing the 6th position.
While Maria has not bagged a singles title this season, she was the runner-up in St. Petersburg, Indian Wells, and Parma. Besides this, she also reached the semifinal in Dubai and the quarterfinal in Rome.
Sakkari fired warning shots in Guadalajara this week when she knocked out the spirited American Danielle Collins 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. That win was preceded by a straight-set win over Marta Kostyuk in round two.
After losing her opening-round bouts in San Diego and Ostrava most recently, the 27-year-old has done well to make up for it.

Bouzkova, Enjoying her Breakthrough
Marie Bouzkova has had a superb season on the 2022 WTA Tour. She became the World No. 38 – a career-best feat for her – in addition to her singles tally now being at 41-12.
These figures are the best that the 24-year-old Czech has delivered in a calendar year – easily surpassing her last year’s record of 16-21.
With that in mind, it is only fitting that Bouzkova ends the season on an equally high note by reaching her maiden WTA 1000 semifinal. One more win and she will compete in the biggest match of her career so far.
What’s impressive is her journey to the final four, which saw her move past Camila Osorio, Tereza Martincova, and Liumdila Samsonova. She met Anna Kalinskaya of Russia in the quarters, but the match ended in the first set when the Russian retired.
Bouzkova’s season highlights include a title from Prague, runner-up silverware in right here in Guadalajara (WTA 250 edition) and a quarterfinal in Wimbledon.
Sakkari v Bouzkova Prediction and Tip
Sakkari is the clear odds-on favourite but do not discard Bouzkova. She is already 8-1 in the Mexican city, and given her season and overall form, she will eye a big win to cap it all off. In fact, Marie makes for a good underdog bet for the risk-taking punters.
On a safer side, this may be a dragged out affair.
