Cilic Continues to Climb Back the Rankings

Aided by a consistent run throughout the season, Marin Cilic has constantly climbed up the rankings and has currently reached the season’t best ranking of no. 13.

The 34-year-old Croatian is 31-18 this year and that includes his first ever semifinal appearance at the French Open. The 2014 U.S. Open champion and two-time major finalist had never gone past the last eight stage at Roland Garros but he did this year, only to fall to tournament runner-up Casper Ruud.

Cilic has fallen in the semis four times this year. However, he did find a way past the final four in Tel Aviv earlier this month, but couldn’t win a 21st title after going down to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. It was the 36th time that the former no. 3 had made it to a tour level final.

Cilic is 19-12 on hard courts this year and 3-2 on indoor surfaces. He lost in the Round of 16 in Astana in his previous tournament, but will be eyeing a deep run in Basel, where he has a 1406 record and was a champion in 2016.

Rinderknech Rallies to Secure Main Draw Berth

After taking down Jason Kubler in a three-set first qualifying round on Saturday, World no. 51 Arthur Rinderknech qualified for the main draw with a comeback win over fellow French player Constant Lestienne.

The world no. 51 lost the first set, came back in the second with a solitary break and then broke Lestienne twice in the final set, while getting broken just once to clinch the contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and move into the main draw in Basel.

A solid hard court player, Rnderknech is in great form recently. He is 9-3 on indoor courts from all levels and in his last three tournaments he was a quarterfinalist in Metz and Tel Aviv and a semifinalist in Gijon.

Rinderknech, who was also a semifinalist in Doha earlier this year, produced his best result at the Adelaide International, where he reached his maiden ATP final but finished runner-up to Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Having brought good form into the tournament, he will be looking to build on it. Can he surprise the fourth seed first up?
