Medvedev Looking to Get Off to a Quick Start

After going down to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals in Astana, Daniil Medvedev comes to Basel, chasing a second title in 2022.

The Russian has featured in four finals this year, including one at the Australian Open, but he has added just one title to his previous 13. That title success came at the ATP 250 in Los Cabos after he beat Cameron Norrie in the final.

The world no. 4 is 40-15 overall this season. Apart from the title and the runner-up finishes at the Australian Open, Rosmalen Open and the Halle Open, he has three semifinal finishes.

But going by his standard, Medvedev would be disappointed not to have reached more finals or won more titles this year. The top seed comes to Vienna for the second time. He was a quarterfinalist on his debut in 2020.

After a shock first round defeat to Stan Wawrinka in Metz, he looked in good rhythm in Astana, where he eased past the first three opponents before going down to Djokovic in their first meeting of the year. Can he get off to a quick start in Vienna and build from there?

Basilashvili Struggling to Win Matches

Nikoloz Basilashvili has struggled throughout the season and more so recently as he has won just one match in his last seven tournaments.

That win came in Metz over Zizou Bergs, who unfortunately had to retire despite being up 4-6, 1-2.

The last time the Georgian looked convincing, it was in Wimbledon, where he won the first two rounds before going down in the third round.

Basilashvili, who is 13-27 overall in 2022, has won consecutive matches in just two tournaments. One of them was in Doha, where had won a title in 2021, but he couldn’t defend the title after going down to Roberto Bautista Agut in the final this year.

The world no. 94, who had started the year as the world no. 22 and briefly broken into the top 20 in the earlier half, has seen a constant decline in the rankings due to his struggles and is in real danger of going out of the top 100. Can he pull off a surprise on Wednesday?
