Jannik Sinner v Cristian Garin Head to Head

It will be a first meeting between the two.

Has Sinner Recovered Completely from His Anke Injury?

A semifinalist last year, Jannik Sinner begins this year’s campaign with hopes of at least matching his last year’s exploits.

The Italian is 45-14 overall this season and is four wins away from equalling his 49-win 2021 season.

Sinner is playing for the first time since retiring from the third set of the Sofia Open semifinal on October 10. An ankle injury stopped him from continuing that match and allowed Holger Rune to move into the final. It will be interesting to see if he has completely overcome that injury as he begins his Vienna campaign.

After winning four titles from five finals last year, the 21-year-old Italian will be disappointed to have reached just one final this year. That was in Umag, whee he claimed the title by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

Sinner has been consistent in the big tournaments though. He was a quarterfinalist in three of the four majors, with Roland Garros being the only major where he lost in the last 16. He also featured in three Masters quarterfinals this year.

A 7-3 record from his last 10 matches suggest that he is in decent touch and if he doesn’t show any signs of the injury he picked in Sofia, he could well be going deep in Vienna.

Garin Continues to Struggle

A solid clay court player, Cristian Garin struggles on hard courts and this year has been no different. The Chilean is 5-8 on the surface and hasn’t been in good form recently.

In fact, ever since making a surprise run to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon — his first at a Grand Slam — he has played in six tournaments but won just two matches. One of those wins came at the U.S. Open and the other more recently in Stockholm last week, when he ousted Jason Kubler in the opening round. He couldn’t win two in a row though as he was ousted by Holger Rune in round 2.

In fact, this season Garin has won consecutive matches in just five tournaments, and those include a semifinal finish in Houston, a quarterfinal finish in Rome and third round finishes at the Australian and the French Opens in addition to the stunning run at the All England Club.

Garin will be desperate to finish the season well and climb up a few spots in the rankings. He was a top 20 player when the year began, but a host of dismal performances has pulled him down to no. 86.

Will the fortunes change for the 26-year-old on Wednesday and will he upset the world no. 12?

Sinner v Garin Prediction and Tip

Neither the surface nor the form suit Garin. It will be a massive challenge for the Chilean to take down the consistent Italian. Sinner is the favourite and should ease into the next round.
