Hurkacz Wins Back-to-Back Three-Setters

For the second straight match on Thursday, Hubert Hurkacz fended off a determined opponent to keep his chances alive in the tournament.

The Pole, who needed two hours and 23 minutes to hold off the in-form Frances Tiafoe in the first round, played out another three-setter in the second round, defeating Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 19 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.

The big-serving Pole, who struck 28 aces against the American, served 21 against Ruusuvuori. Hurkacz also won 81% (46 of 57) points on his first serve. On return, he broke his opponent twice in the match, getting the solitary breaks of the first and the third sets.

Thursday’s win was Hurkacz’s 40th of the season. The world no. 11 will be playing in a fourth consecutive quarterfinal, having also reached that far in Metz, Astana and Antwerp. While he reached as far as the semis in Metz, he lost in the last eight in the other two tournaments.

Hurkacz, who won his fifth ATP title in Halle and finished runner-up at the Canadian Open, will hope to reach a sixth semifinal of the year.

Coric Beats Tsitsipas Again

Borna Coric came back from a set down to beat the second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas for the second time this season and the third time in his career.

The Greek has never beaten the Croatian in a completed match and the trend continued as Coric showed fight in a two-hour-and-44 minute thriller.

Coric saved 9 of 12 break points that he faced and converted half of the six that he held during the match, which needed a deciding set tiebreak to separate the two. And it was just one minibreak that decided the fate of the match. That minibreak fell to Coric as he built a 3-2 lead and then went on to hold his nerve and serve to register a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory.

Coric had won his first ever Masters title this year by beating Tsitsipas in the Cincinnati Open final. Thanks to that victory Coric leaped from 152nd in the world to the top 30.

Currently ranked no. 27th, he is enjoying a good spell particularly after losing a year due to an injury and surgery. He began his 2022 campaign very late but has been excellent ever since the start of the North American hard court season.

Having brought an 11-3 record from the last 14 matches into the tournament, he has now improved to 13-3 from the last 16. Coric had begun his Vienna challenge with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Quentin Halys.

Hurkacz v Coric Prediction and Tip

Both players have won back-to-back three-setters and they can expect another one on Friday. It will be a close one, but given Hurkacz’s recent consistency on indoor courts, he may edge past the Croatian.

Tip: Hurkacz to win in three sets: 16/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
