Grigor Dimitrov v Marcos Giron Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their two previous meetings. Interestingly both were at Roland Garros, Dimitrov retired from last year’s contest in the fourth set, while leading 2-sets-to-1. He however eased past Giron in this year’s meeting, winning the first round contest 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

Dimitrov Upsets Rublev

Grigor Dimitrov avenged his 2022 Indian Wells quarterfinals defeat to Andrey Rublev on Thursday, as the 31-year-old Bulgarian upset the third set in the second round to progress in Vienna.

Dimitrov, who had also scored a straight sets win over Brazilian qualifier Thiago Monteiro in the first round, needed just 72 minutes to beat the Russian 6-3, 6-4.

While the Bulgarian didn’t face a break point in the opening match, he did face one in second round, which he could not save. However, he remained in command throughout the match and eventually converted half of the six break points that he held to knock out the world no. 8.

The world no. 32 has now improved to 23-20 for the season. An eight-time winner on the tour, he will be eyeing a third semifinal spot of the season, the previous two came in Melbourne and Monte-Carlo.

Thursday marked the first time since the French Open that Dimitrov had won consecutive matches this year. That included early disappointments in nine tournaments in a row. Now back in form, he will be full of confidence going into the last eight stage of the tournament. Can he keep the momentum going?

Giron Shocks Norrie

Like Dimitrov, Giron too produced a second round upset, defeating the seventh seed Cameron Norrie in straight sets.

The American, who had saved three of three break points in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Tallon Griekspoor in the first round, was broken once by Norrie during the second round contest. He however, broke the Briton twice in the opening round and once in the next to register a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Norrie did show some resistance in the end though, creating two break points in the final game, and putting Giron’s serve under pressure, but the world no. 58 saved both the break points before pulling off the escape act.

Giron, who has struggled on the tour this year, improved his season record to 18-27. He made plenty of first round exits this season, but is finishing the year well. He was a finalist in San Diego recently and is now a win away from a third semifinal of the season. Earlier he had made it to the final four in Dallas.

Dimitrov v Giron Prediction and Tip

Dimitrov is a seasoned campaigner and is coming of his second top 10 victory of the season. Expect the Bulgarian to keep the good work going in the quarterfinal.
