Roberto Bautista Agut v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

They are 1-1 from their previous two matchups but it will be their first since 2019.

Bautista Agut Stops Murray

After disappointing back-to-back first round upsets in Gijon and Napoli, Roberto Bautista Agut seems to be back in his elements as the world no. 22 marched into his fourth consecutive Basel quarterfinal with a straight sets win over Andy Murray.

It wasn’t an easy contest by any means, as Bautista Agut was the first to be broken in the first set but he responded with an immediate break to make it 2-2 and then surged ahead with another break to take the opening set.

The Spaniard got two breaks in the second set as well to win the one hour and 41 minutes contest 6-3, 6-2. The 34-year-old saved as many as 7 of 8 break points in the match, while he converted 4 of 9.

An 11-time champion on the tour, Bautista Agut is chasing a third title of the year. He triumphed in Qatar and Kitzbuhel and finished runner-up in Mallorca.

Thursday’s victory was his 38th of the season. He had earlier beaten Laslo Djere 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round. He has not reached an indoor semifinal this year. Will that happen in Basel, where he was also a quarterfinalist in his three previous appearances?

Wawrinka Continues to March Forward

After pulling off a huge win over second seed Caser Ruud in the opening round, Stan Wawrinka continued his march in the tournament with a second round win over Brandon Nakashima.

The former no. 3 seemed on verge of taking the contest when he served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but a spirited Nakashima fought back to stay in the contest and force the decider.

Wawrinka however regrouped and got the solitary break of the third set to beat the world no. 44 and advance to a sixth quarterfinal in his home tournament.

Only twice has the 37-year-old reached the semifinals in Basel and has never reached a final. Could that happen this year?

The world no. 194 had stunned Ruud 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round of the tournament. After struggling big time throughout the season, the three-time Grand Slam winner is playing well at the back end of the season. He was a semifinalist in Metz and is one more upset away from a second semifinal of the season.

Bautista Agut v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

Expect this to be a close contest. Will the home factor favour Wawrinka or will the most consistent Bautista Agut move into the final four? Looking at how the season has gone so far for the two players, the odds favour Bautista Agut and the Spaniard should emerge victorious.
