Maria Sakkari v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head

Sabalenka leads 4-2, although their last meeting was in 2021 – right here in the WTA Finals robin round. Sakkari won that in three sets.

Sabalenka Fends Off Jabeur

Number seven seed Aryna Sabalenka is off to a superb start as she beat Ons Jabeur 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in two and a half hours. Even though the Belarusian had an inferior service game and winners count to Ons, she got through by winning the right points at the right moment.

The 24-year-old won just 60% of the points behind the first serve while hitting a mere 21 winners (to Jabeur’s 75% and 37), but as it turns out, the lady luck was on her side.

In some ways, it is not too surprising. Sabalenka did make it to the WTA Finals on the back of an underwhelming season – at least by her standards.

Currently, she is 31-20 (one of the lowest tallies in the field) and has only two runner-up feats to her name from Stuttgart 500 and Rosmalen Championships.

Moreover, with the exception of the US Open and Cincinnati Open (both semifinal appearances), Sabalenka failed to win more than one match in five tournaments since that Den Bosch final.

But perhaps, it is here in Texas that she takes the cake and makes up for it all.

Sakkari Moves Past Pegula

World No. 5 Maria Sakkari is now 38-22 after beating Jessica Pegula 7-6(6), 7-6(4) in the first match of the robin round.

The match lasted two hours, and not much separated the Greek from Pegula; it was a fiercely-contested affair. But in the end, Sakkari kept her calm in those key moments and on the back of her brilliant pedigree, she got through.

Her service game wasn’t up to the mark either – she won 61% of the points behind the first serve. Of course, she will need to up herself with Sabalenka.

As a last year’s semifinalist in the Finals, Sakkari will fancy her chances of winning this one and making the cut again. She is already in a comfortable position and looks primed to seal the deal – especially given her season so far.

Sabalenka v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

Between the two, anything can happen, but Sakkari is an appealing choice.

She has four finals to her name in 2022 – including the Indian Wells Open and, most recently, the Guadalajara Open. Maria has wind in her sails and will definitely look forward to getting one up against Sabalenka.
