Frances Tiafoe made a brisk start at the Paris Masters, knocking out Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets.
Tiafoe did not face a single break point in the match, while he broke Sonego once in each set to win the one-hour-and-15-minute contest 6-4, 6-4.
The world no. 21, who was a semifinalist at the U.S. Open this year, won 84% on his first delivery, struck 22 winners and won 18 of 23 net points.
Tiafoe, who was a finalist in Tokyo recently, was coming off a first round defeat in Vienna. But he has been in such a good form recently that he quickly overcame the setback in the first round in Paris to move into the round of 32 in Paris for the second time in his fourth attempt.
Tiafoe, who won his only title in Delray Beach in 2018, was the runner-up in his two finals this year in Estoril and Tokyo.
Having got off to a good start he will be aiming to advance into the last 16 of the tournament for the first time.

Draper Takes Down French Wild Card
World no. 45 Jack Draper put up a splendid first round display on Tuesday to march into the round of 32 on his Paris Masters debut.
The 20-year-old Briton won 97% (30 of 31) points on the back of his first serve as he knocked out French wild card Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-4.
In the one-hour-and-31-minute contest, the lefty didn’t face a break point in the first set. He did face his first two break points in the final game of the match, but he saved both of them before converting the match point and progressing into the next round.
With the win, Draper improved his season record to 17-11 on the tour and 44-16 overall. A winner of four Challenger titles this year, he was a semifinalist in Eastbourne and a quarterfinalist in Montreal and has take a huge leap in the rankings, after having started the season as World no. 265. Can Draper add another win in what’s been a breakthrough season?

Tiafoe has been one of the most competitive players on the tour over the last couple of months. He didn’t have much trouble in dispatching the first round opponent and will be the favourite in the second round as well. But Draper won’t go down without a fight and he may take the American into the deciding set.
