Rafael Nadal v Tommy Paul Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and that came in Acapulco earlier this year. Nadal had won that in straight sets

Nadal Returns after US Open

The only competitive match that Nadal played since his fourth round exit at the US Open earlier this year was at the Laver Cup where he combined with Roger Federer one last time.

He returns to ATP tennis ranked second in the world with a chance of finishing the year as the top-ranked player but has categorically said he is not looking for that fight.

And while that would be a cherry on the top of a brilliant year that has seen him clinch a couple of Grand Slam titles already, Nadal has other more important things on his mind. Like becoming a dad for the first time.

Whether that would be a factor in this opening round tie against Paul remains to be seen, but what could certainly be of importance is the possibility of some rustiness.

It’s been nearly two months since Nadal did feature in a singles match and while he is no amateur, that could prove to be a bit of an advantage for his opponent.

Struggling Paul Stuns Bautista-Agut

Things haven’t quite gone his way since his second round win over Sebastian Korda at the US Open with the American coming into this tournament with a 3-4 win-loss record on the ATP circuit.

Which is probably why he was a 4/3 underdog in his opener against Roberto Bautista-Agut. And which is also why, a straight-set win over his Spanish opponent would have been the last thing one thought might happen.

In the end, Paul was on court for an hour and 28 minutes as he overcame a break-back from Bautista-Agut in the opening set to carve out a 6-4, 6-4 win.

The American will now to need to up the ante against another Spaniard, this time a player with 22 Grand Slam titles under his belt, and that might not be the easiest of tasks.

The only teeny-weeny advantage Paul might have is Nadal’s absence from the tour might allow him a quicker start. Would he be able to sustain it though?

Nadal v Paul Prediction and Tip

Nadal will be a heavy favourite here, and while the American might have that initial advantage, we are still looking at a straight-set win for the Spaniard.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 4/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
