Auger-Aliassime Eases Past Simon

A day after winning a three-hour-and-30-minute epic against Mikael Ymer in the second round, eighth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime breezed past Gilles Simon to reach his first quarterfinal of the Paris Masters.

The win extended the Canadian’s red-hot streak to 15 matches and he is now two wins from reaching a fourth consecutive final and three wins from clinching a fourth title in a row.

Auger-Aliassime won three titles in a row in Florence, Antwerp and Basel over the last three week and has continued the win streak in Paris.

The world no. 8’s latest victory came over French wild card Simon. Auger-Aliassime served 11 aces, won 75% points on his first serve and saved both the break points that he faced during a 6-1, 6-3 victory. He created seven break point opportunities in the contest and capitalised on four of those.

Auger-Aliassime, who had a first round bye, had escaped elimination in the second round with a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Ymer.

The 22-year-old, who had lost all eight finals before this year, has won four titles from five finals this year and that includes a title in Rotterdam and a runner-up finish in Marseille.

With all five finals coming on indoor courts, the Canadian has an enviable 24-3 record on the surface in 2022. Can he keep the winning streak intact on Friday?

Tiafoe Ousts De Minaur

World no. 21 Frances Tiafoe scored a third consecutive straight sets win in the tournament on Thursday to march into his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal and a first in Paris.

The American, who wasn’t broken in the first two matches, faced a bit of a stiff challenge in the third round as he needed an hour and 41 minutes to edge past Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Tiafoe, who got the solitary break to take the first set, found himself 3-5 down in the second but he immediately responded by getting the break back and then edged out the Aussie in the tiebreak.

The American did not face a break point during a 6-4, 6-4 win over Lorenzo Sonego in the first round and saved seven of seven against Jack Draper during a 6-3, 7-5 second round victory.

The 24-year-old, who reached his first major semifinal at the U.S. Open this year, has reached two finals this season, finishing runner-up in Estoril and Tokyo. He is 14-5 from his last 19 matches. Can he end Auger-Aliassime’s unbeaten run on Friday?
