Lehecka Outplayed by Nakashima

Jiri Lehecka scored a convincing win in his first match on Tuesday, but went down easily to Brandon Nakashima’s hitting in the second match on Wednesday. As a result of the straight sets defeat to the American, the Czech now needs to win his final match in at least four sets to give himself a chance to qualify for the semifinals.

The Green Group is wide open with all four players still in hunt, and Lehecka is currently no.2 in the standings thanks to his three sets win over Francesco Passaro in the opening match.

Both Lehecka and Passaro are 1-1, but the latter is third on the table because of the percentage of sets won. For Lehecka to qualify he will need to win, a defeat will end his season. A win in either three or four sets should be good for qualification, but if he wins in five, then depending on the result of the last match, the percentage of games won could decide his fate.

The 20-year-old Lehecka found the going tough against the World no. 49 on Wednesday. He conceded the only break of the first set, but showed some resistance in the second, coming back from a break down and forcing the tiebreak. Nakashima dominated the tiebreak to take a two sets to love lead. Lehecka started the third set well, building a 2-0 lead, but the fourth seed won the next four in a row to win the match 4-1, 4-3 (7-2), 4-2.

Lehecka had beaten Passaro 4-1, 4-3 (9-7), 4-1 in the first match.

Arnaldi Loses Another Five-Setter

A day after going down to Brandon Nakashim in five, Matteo Arnaldi lost another five-set thriller. This time the defeat came against compatriot Francisco Passaro and as a result of the loss, the 21-year-old is now at the bottom of the Green group. But he is not eliminated yet and can still qualify for the semifinals.

While it’s not entirely in Arnaldi’s hands, he still needs to do his bit and then wait for the result of the final match. If Arnaldi loses to Lehecka he is out, but if he wins and then Nakashima goes on to beat Passaro in the final match, then regardless of the score, Naashima would top the group and Arnaldi would finish second.

That’s the only scenario how Arnaldi can go through and it is still a huge possibility as Passaro was struggling during his five-set win over Arnaldi and may not be at his 100% in the final match. But the question is can Arnaldi win against Lehecka? The Italian has struggled to close out matches after stretching his first two opponents to the final set. Can he hold nerves in the final match against a more experienced opponent who is in the top 100 in the world?

Arnaldi would be ruing the missed opportunities against Passaro on Wednesday. He had three match points in the final set tiebreak, but couldn’t take any of those before going down to a struggling Passaro, who was cramping in the later stages and was hampered for movement.

Passaro eventually won 4-3 (9-7), 2-4, 3-4 (4-7), 4-3 (7-4), 4-3 (10-8). Arnaldi had lost the opener to Nakashima in five as well.

Lehecka v Arnaldi Prediction and Tip

Lehecka is the more experienced player at the top level and scored some big wins this year, reaching the semifinals in Rotterdam and quarterfinals in Kitzbuhel. He is better equipped to soak in the pressure of the final day and should win in either three or four sets and qualify for the semifinals.

Tip: Lehecka to win in straight sets: 5/2 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
