Nakashima Eases Past Lehecka

After being stretched to the hilt by Matteo Arnaldi in the opener, Brandon Nakashima upped the level in the second match on Wednesday and produced a straight sets win over Jiri Lehecka, thus going on top of the Green Group with a 2-0 record.

While he sits pretty on top following the 4-1, 4-3 (7-3), 4-2 win on Wednesday, he still hasn’t qualified for the semifinals. A win for Matteo Arnaldi in his match against Jiri Lehecka would assure Nakashima a spot in the semifinals. But a win for Lehecka could make things interesting. However only a heavy defeat would then prevent Nakashima from moving into the semifinals.

Which looks unlikely as Nakashima raised his level in the second match against Lehecka. He struck 21 winners, including 7 aces and converted 4 of 10 break points to defeat the Czech player in an hour and nine minutes.

Nakashima was run close by Arnaldi in the first match, but he eventually found a way past the local hope with a 2-4, 4-3 (9-7), 4-3 (7-4), 3-4 (4-7), 4-2 win in two hours and 11 minutes.

The World no. 49, who won his maiden title at the San Diego Open, is looking to reach the semifinals for the second consecutive year.

Passaro Saves Three MPs To Edge Out Arnaldi

Struggling to move due to cramps, Francesco Passaro showed great resolve and hung on for a determined win over compatriot Matteo Arnaldi in his second match of the group on Wednesday.

The five set win crafted over two hours and 39 minutes, put Passaro in the third spot in the group with a 1-1 record from the two matches.

Passaro, who was outplayed by Jiri Lehecka in straight sets in the first match, didn’t give up in the second even when he had his back to the wall. The world no. 119 was 4-6 down in the final set tiebreak, but he fought back saving both the match points and then a third at 6-7.

He then surged ahead with two minibreaks, squandered a match point of his own, but capitalised on his second match point opportunity of the tiebreak to seal a 4-3 (9-7), 2-4, 3-4 (4-7), 4-3 (7-4), 4-3 (10-8) victory.

He will be completely drained after that effort but with the possibility if qualification still alive he may be hoping to recover in time to give his best in the final match. A win for Arnaldi and Passaro, could help the latter qualify. But if Lehecka wins, then Passaro will need a three sets win on Thursday to give himself a chance.

Nakashima v Passaro Prediction and Tip

Nakashima is playing well and has shown some level of consistency this year. He is expected to win again on Thursday and advance to the semifinals with a perfect record.
