Ruud Makes a Bright Start

A semifinalist on his debut last year, Casper Ruud began his 2022 ATP Finals campaign on a solid note, defeating the in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets.

The world no. 4, who has had another splendid year on the tour, had not come into the season finale in great shape, bringing a 2-4 record from last four tournaments. But he put the recent disappointments behind him as he topped the Canadian 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to improve to 49-20 this season.

While neither player could create a break point in the first set, Ruud created the only one of the match in the second set and he capitalised on it to win 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in an hour and 52 minutes.

The Norwegian, who finished runner-up in Roland Garros and the U.S. Open this year, also reached the final in Miami. While he finished second in the three big finals, he won three titles in Buenos aires, Geneva and Gstaad to take his total tally to nine career titles.

Ruud, who peaked to a career-high ranking of no. 2 in September this year, will be looking to build on the great start and score another win on Tuesday.

Fritz Defeats Nadal in Opener

Taylor Fritz got his second win over Rafael Nadal in 2022 to make a winning start on his ATP Finals debut.

The American squandered three break points in the first set before dominating the tiebreak and taking a one-set-to-love lead. He was even more dominant in the second set dropping just one game and breaking Nadal twice to win the match 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

The 25-year-old, who made his top 10 debut this year, didn’t face a single break point in the match and won 80% points on the back of his first delivery. He also struck 23 winners in the match and converted 2 of 9 break points.

The world no. 9 has won three titles from three finals this year, including the Indian Wells Open, where he beat Nadal to win his maiden ATP Finals title.

Overall Fritz improved to 44-19 this year. He has never played Ruud before but will be up for the challenge on Tuesday.

Ruud v Fritz Prediction and Tip

It is going to be an intriguing contest. Ruud’s past experience in the season-ending tournament and his solid run this year hold him in good stead. Expect the Norwegian to win a close contest.
