Rafael Nadal v Felix Auger-Aliassime Head to Head

Nadal leads the rivalry 2-0. Both were clay court meetings, one of which was this year at Roland Garros.

Nadal Loses Opener

Rafael Nadal’s return from the abdominal injury hasn’t gone too well. The Spaniard, who went down to Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round of the U.S. Open, lost to Tommy Paul at the Paris Masters 12 days ago. It was his first match since the U.S. Open exit.

In his second match since the return from injury on Sunday, Nadal went down to Taylor Fritz in straight sets, thus extending his current losing streak to three matches.

Despite the loss, Nadal still has a chance to end the season as the world no. 1. But for that to happen, he will have to lift the season finale in Turin. He has never done that before and hasn’t started off the campaign on a bright note. So things do look a bit difficult for now.

In Sunday’s opener, the world no. 2 saved a break point in the third game and two more in the seventh game to stay on serve, but he conceded two mini-breaks in the tiebreak to lose the first set. It was all Fritz from that point on striking the ball well and racing to victory with a double break in the second set.

Nadal made 22 unforced errors in the match and didn’t hold a single break point during the 6-7 (3-7), 1-6 defeat. He faces an even difficult opponent in the second match on Tuesday. Can the 36-year-old return to winning ways?

Auger-Aliassime Defeated By Ruud

After winning 16 matches in a row, including three consecutive titles, Felix Auger-Aliassime has suddenly lost back-to-back matches. His first defeat came last week in the semifinals of the Paris Masters, when the eventual champion Holger Rune ended the Canadian’s extraordinary run.

Auger-Aliassime couldn’t bounce back immediately from that defeat as he suffered a second loss to third seed Casper Ruud in their opening round robin match at the ATP Finals. There was just one break point chance in the entire match and that fell to Ruud in the seventh game of the second set. The Norwegian took in gleefully and then held on to win the contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

The 22-year-old, who has won four titles from five finals, is 57-27 from all his matches this season. While on indoor surfaces he has been particularly dangerous and the 25-5 record is a clear reflection of that.

The world no. 6 is making his debut in the season-ending tournament and wouldn’t want to leave too soon. He will be desperate to return to winning ways and a win over the top seed could brighten his chances of qualification.

Nadal v Auger-Aliassime Prediction and Tip

Nadal is short of match practice, while Auger-Aliassime has looked unstoppable over the last one month. The last two matches were a setback for the Canadian but he still has a good chances of moving into the semifinals. Exoect this to be a great game, with form slightly favouring the Canadian.
