Stefanos Tsitsipas v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head

Medvedev leads the rivalry 7-3. But that lead is thanks to the early dominance of the Russian, who won all of their first five meetings. If one looks at the record of the last five matches, then Tsitsipas leads 3-2.

They met twice in 2022, with Medvedev winning the Australian Open semifinal and Tsitsipas winning the Cincinnati Open semifinal.

Tsitsipas Goes Down to Djokovic

Stefanos Tsitsipas just can’t find a way past Novak Djokovic and the Greek was once again defeated by the Serb in their opening match of Red Group on Monday.

It was Tsitsipas’ fourth defeat to the 21-time Grand Slam champion in 2022. As a result of the loss he now trails Djokovic 2-10 in the head-to-head rivalry and has lost nine consecutive matches to the former world no. 1.

Monday’s defeat saw Tsitsipas lose serve in the very first game, which immediately handed the momentum to Djokovic, who dominated the proceedings for the rest of the match to clinch a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory.

Tsitsipas held just one break point in the entire match and that was in the fourth game of the second set, but he could not capitalise on that. He made a comeback bid after falling 1-5 behind in the second set tiebreak, but eventually fell short to go down in the opener. The loss ended his bid to claim the year-end no. 1 ranking. For that to happen, the world no. 3 had to clinch the title without losing a single match.

Now only Rafael Nadal can prevent Carlos Alcaraz from ending the season as the world no. 1. Nadal will have to go on to win the title to clinch the top spot in the rankings. If he fails to win, Alcaraz will finish the year as the no. 1.

For the 24-year-old Tsitsipas, there is still a lot to play for. He is chasing an eighth final in 2022 and a third title of the season, having triumphed in Monte-Carlo and Mallorca. He is also a past champion in the season-ending tournament, and will be looking to add to his 2019 success by winning in Turin.

But the man with 60 wins this season faces an uphill task in the next contest. Both Tsitsipas and Medvedev lost their opening matches and a defeat in the second match may make it very tough for them to qualify for the semifinals.

Medvedev Loses Up-And-Down Opener

Daniil Medvedev had dominated the first four meetings against fellow Russian Andrey Rublev. But the latter seems to have worked out the formula to defeat the former no. 1 as he scored his second straight win over Medvedev on Monday.

The edge-of-the-seat contest saw Medvedev come back from 1-4 down in the first set and save two set points at 5-6 to force the tiebreak. He even fell 2-6 behind in the tiebreak but made an outstanding comeback to save five more set points before claiming the opening set.

Medvedev was outplayed in the second set though and then Rublev built a sizeable lead in the final set tiebreak as well. Medvedev saved four match points to stay in the contest but he couldn’t save a fifth one and went down 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in a two hour and 34 minute thriller.

The world no. 5, who reached the final of the ATP Finals over the last two years, won the title in 2020 and finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev last year. To reach that far he will have to win the next contest against Tsitsipas and keep his qualification chances alive. A defeat may make it immensely difficult for him to progress.

The Russian, who won the titles in Los Cabos and Vienna this year and finished runners-up at the Australian, Rosmalen and Halle Opens, hasn’t had the best of years by his standards. He did secure the number-one ranking twice, but a few indifferent performances and his inability to shine in big tournaments haven’t allowed him to stay on top for long. Now he will be under pressure in the next match, Can he extend his dominance over Tsitsipas or will the Greek close the gap on the Russian?

Tsitsipas v Medvedev Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas has had a superior record this year and has been very consistent throughout. Medvedev may have had his ups and downs but he still has a dominant record over the Greek and would hold the psychological edge going into the contest. This should be another close contest with Medvedev edging Tsitsipas.
