Medvedev Out of Semis Race

He was a champion in 2020 and a runner-up last year, but this year Daniil Medvedev’s run at the ATP Finals would come to an end in the round robin stage.

For the second straight match on Wednesday, Medvedev went down in a three-set thriller. The two defeats mean that he is now at the bottom of Red Group and will be playing his last match of the season on Friday.

Medvedev put up a great fight against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Wednesday, saving three match points in the second set tiebreak and forcing the deciding set. But he threw away a 5-3 lead in the final set, before being blown away in the deciding set tiebreak.

Tsitsipas eventually won the two hours and 22 minutes contest 6-3, 6-7 (11-13), 7-6 (7-1) and closed the gap on the Russian in the head-to-head rivalry. Medvedev still leads 7-4.

It has been a roller-coaster year for the World no. 5, who had reached the World no. 1 ranking twice but due to a host of atypical performances has not been able to cling on to that.

Medvedev won two titles from five finals this year, but the Australian Open remains the only big tournament where he made the final.

At the ATP Finals, he had lost his opening match to Andrey Rublev even after taking the first set.

With his chances of qualification over, can he now score a win over Djokovic and end the season on a winning note.

Djokovic Continues to Excel

Chasing a sixth ATP Finals title, Novak Djokovic seems well on course as the Serb booked his place in the semis with a straight sets win over Andrey Rublev on Wednesday.

Djokovic has now won 15 of his last 16 matches. The series of wins began in Tel Aviv, where he picked up the title. He followed it up by triumphing in Astana, but his win streak ended with a defeat to Holger Rune in the final of the Paris Masters.

The Serb, who began his campaign at this year’s ATP Finals, by defeating second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets, overpowered Rublev in just 68 minutes in the second match to stay on top of the Red Group with a 2-0 record. Djokovic hasn’t been broken in the first two matches. While he faced one break point against Tsitsipas, he faced none against the Russian.

In contrast, he had four break points in the match against Rublev and he capitalised on three of those chances.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion is looking to equal Roger Federer’s record of six ATP Finals titles. He has improved his tournament record to 43-17 and this is the third consecutive year that he has made it to the semifinals. The Serb last won an ATP Finals title in 2015 and finished runners-up in 2016 and 2018.

This year, the world No. 8 has won four titles, including the Wimbledon. He will be eager to finish the season with five.

Medvedev v Djokovic Prediction and Tip
