Never has Swan won more ITF titles than the three she won last season, ending the year with one in the penultimate tournament she featured in at Trnava.
That formed a part of her 23-7 win-loss record on hard court surfaces, both indoor and outdoor but what would have made it doubly special was her showing at Chennai in a WTA tournament she featured in in September.
Swan followed on from an ITF title win at Lexington to make it to the semifinal in Chennai and then won that tournament in Trnava to round off a solid showing in 2022.
The 23-year-old, however, still ended the season ranked 145th in the world as compared to the 118th that she had touched earlier in the season.
She should start off with some confidence here against a player who has fallen a wee bit in the rankings.

Hives Hoping to Get Back to Her Best
According to news sources, Hives had been out of action for most part of 2021 and 2022 because of a condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. It’s a debilitating condition which makes it difficult for anyone to even take a walk, let alone hit a tennis ball.
Out of action since September 2019, Hives made a comeback to the tour earlier in 2022, and then qualified for Wimbledon.
So while she hasn’t done too much of note beyond that in 2022, Hives’ story is that of grit and determination.
Hives will now hope that coming into the United Cup at her home will work in favour and the fact she could actually play a couple of matches here could go a long way in helping her kick-start a process of making a comeback.
Can she overcome an opponent who had shown some remarkable form at the lower level towards the end of the previous season?
