Caroline Garcia v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2017 Monterrey Open where Garcia dropped a mere three games in her rout of Podoroska.

Garcia Stunning in 2022

It was the month of May in 2022 when Garcia had stumbled to a second round at French Open and dropped down to 79th in the world. It had been her lowest WTA Ranking since 2014, and the former world number eight looked like her career was winding down at a mere age of 29.

It was from that point on that Garcia turned things around, stunningly capturing four tournament wins including the big prize of the WTA Finals. What made it even more intriguing was that the surface didn’t matter.

Garcia first clinched the Bad Homburg Open on grass, then another on clay in Warsaw before capturing the Cincinnati Open as a qualifier on outdoor hard court.

And if that wasn’t enough, the Frenchwoman rounded it off with a title victory on the indoor hard courts of the WTA Final.

With that kind of form under her belt, Garcia will hope she can continue in the same vein in 2023 as well and starting things off here on a strong note will be one way to go about her business.

Podoroska’s Ranking Takes a Tumble

Only last year had Podoroska hit a career-high WTA Ranking of 36th in the world. By the end of the 2022 season, the Argentine had plunged to 298th in the world and then made some recovery to end the year at 195th.

At the crux of the issue was her absence from the sport for a period of 10 months because of fitness concerns. Podoroska returned to the tour at the 2022 Wimbledon where she played in a couple of qualifying rounds.

A clay court specialist, Podoroska then made the semifinal at two such events on the ITF tour, and then another final in August.

It was her showing at the WTA Chennai Open which helped her come back to around 210th in the world before a couple of solid performances at the ITF level helped her break into the top 200.

Can Podoroska now kick off her 2023 campaign with a solid showing that helps her get some of her confidence back, even if she doesn’t actually go on to win her opener here?

Garcia v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Garcia should have no trouble getting past Podoroska here, and the odds represent exactly that. Expect a straight-set win for Garcia in this one.
