Despina Papamichail v Alison van Uytvanck Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 29 year old Greek, and the Belgian, who is a year younger.

Papamichail Makes Winning Start in Australia

Papamichail is proof that there is more to Greek women’s tennis than Maria Sakkari, and begins the New Year close to her all-time singles ranking.

That is despite the fact that it was as recently as 2021 in Abu Dhabi that she made her main tour debut.

She has won 15 titles on the ITF tour, the most recent of which was in June 2022 in Italy. Later that same month she was a beaten finalist in an event in the Czech Republic.

Papamichail made a winning start to her Australian campaign, coming from behind to beat the Bulgarian Isabelle Shinikova.

It was the 31 year old who took the first set, but the Greek rallied to level the match, and then, despite losing her serve at the start of the third set, was able to cruise to victory, reeling off three breaks in succession.

Van Uytvanck Struggles Past Bulgarian

Van Uytvanck has won five senior singles and two doubles titles, but 2022 was not her best year on tour, and she ended it with her lowest ranking in five years.

Her last tournament victory was at the Astana Open in October 2021, when she beat local player Yulia Putintseva in the final.

She made hard work of her opening match in the United Cup, where she was pitted against Shinikova, ranked 381st in the world.

Initially, though, it looked as if the Belgian was in line for a comfortable victory as she breezed through the first set for the loss of just one game. And when she went a break up in the second she was in a very strong position, only to squander her advantage by allowing two successive breaks against her own serve.

One break of serve in the third set was enough to finally tilt the match her way.

Papamichail v Van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip

Both women needed three sets to beat Shinikova so there is little to glean from that, especially as results this early in the season can be deceptive when it comes to judging form.

However, the Belgian is the more experienced of the pair at this level, and that could prove to be the decisive factor in this match.
