Diaz Hoping to Impress

Nuria Parrizas Diaz, age 31, lost her opening-round fixture to Katie Swan of Great Britain. Although she won the first set, she went down 6-3, 1-6, 2-6.

The Spaniard had a good spell in 2022 and has set the base quite nicely for the new season. She peaked at the 45th spot in the singles ranking before closing as World No. 70.

Diaz wasn’t that impressive in the closing leg of the season as she lost her first-round bout in the US Open, Budapest 125, Parma Open, and Jasmin Open. In the BJK Cup Finals, she beat Yulia Putintseva but lost to the then #133 Heather Watson in straight sets.

The highlight of her season came in Monterrey and the Australian Open, where she reached the semifinal and the third round respectively.

Hives, Eager to Make a Name for Herself

26-year-old Australian Zoe Hives may not be well-known on the circuit, but she can change that in the United Cup. She did lose to Katie Swan in the opener by 4-6, 3-6.

She is ranked #772, having spent most of the 2022 year on the ITF Tour. Zoe didn’t play in that many events either, with her best result coming in Chiang Rai where she reached round two.

In her defence, the United Cup player hasn’t been playing tennis regularly due to a rather serious blood disorder.

Hives played her first competitive match since September 2019, only in January 2022. In those 2+ years, she only focussed on recovery and not practising.

Perhaps, on home turf is where the former World No. 140 finds her rhythm again?

Diaz v Hives Prediction and Tip

Diaz has the advantage but Hives may be a player worth backing, given her home advantage. This has all the makings of being an entertaining affair with the Aussie set to do her best to make her nation proud.
