The pair have never played each other before. This will the first match between the 25 year old Spaniard, and the Dutchman, one year older.

Munar Enjoyed Challenger Success in 2022

Munar’s one senior final on the senior tour came back in 2021, on home soil in Andalucía, when he finished runner-up to compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta.

However, he did claim success on the Challenger tour in 2022, winning events in Marbella in April and In Perugia, Italy, two months later.

Both of those triumphs came on clay, his favourite surface.

He has not played a competitive match since failing to qualify for the Paris Masters at the end of October. However, he ended 2022 at a year  high ranking, and just six places below his previous best, which occurred in 2019.

Among the highlights of his year were qualifying for four Masters 1000 tournaments, and beating top seed Casper Ruud in straight sets at the Tokyo Open. It was his second defeat of a top 10 player at his 13th attempt, having previously beaten Alexander Zverev back in 2019.

One area he needs to improve is his Grand Slam record. He has never been beyond the second round of any of them.

Griekspoor Hoping to Translate Challenger Form Here

The current Dutch number two, Griekspoor really burst onto the scene in 2021, when he won eight Challenger titles, and became the first man ever in tennis history to win five in a row at that level.

He added to his haul in 2022 in Amersfoort, and also claimed his first senior title when he won the doubles at the European Open in Antwerp, where he was partnered by compatriot Botic van Zandschulp.

Like his opponent, he failed to qualify for the Paris Masters, but he did play for his country the following month in the Davis Cup.

He was beaten in the one rubber he played by Jordan Thompson of Australia, going down in three sets.

He reached a career high ranking of 44 in the world in August, but that dropped sharply when he could not defend the points gained the previous year on the Challenger tour.

Like Munar, he has never progressed beyond the second round in a Grand Slam.

Munar v Griekspoor Prediction and Tip

Munar is the higher ranked and seeded, but the surface favours Griekspoor more, and he could begin 2023 by causing a minor upset.
