Karatsev Looking for Form of a Year Ago

Karatsev enjoyed a golden 12 months between March 2021 and February 2022, reaching four ATP finals and winning three of them, most recently the Sydney International last January.

He was also a beaten finalist in the French Open Mixed Doubles and picked up a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the same period.

His decline coincided with his country’s invasion of Ukraine, and whether the difficulties he encountered as a result affected him disproportionately, it is hard to judge. The result was a drop-off in his performances and his ranking suffered as a result.

The last time he won a match on the senior tour was at the Swedish Open back in October.

Andujar Now at Veteran Stage

Andujar is now reaching the veteran stage of a career, that has seen him reach nine finals on the senior ATP tour, and win four of them, although the last of those victories was back in 2018.

The fact that all those finals occurred in clay court events indicates where the strength of his game lies.

However, he did reach the final in the doubles at the Geneva Open in May, where he ended on the losing side along with partner Matwé Middelkoop.

Two months later he lost in the final of a Challenger tournament in Romania.

The last time he played on the senior tour was in Tel Aviv in September, where he was beaten in the second round by Novak Djokovic.

Karatsev v Andujar Prediction and Tip

Karatsev will be looking to make a strong start to the year, and should have little difficulty in beating a player much more at home on clay.
