Venus Williams v Katie Volynets Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Venus Williams and Volynets before this opening round encounter in Auckland.

Williams Last Won in June 2021

The retirement question has been looming large for Venus for a while now but she has managed to avoid going down her sister Serena Williams’ path for now.

The question does have its merit. After all Venus hasn’t won anything in a while. And when I say anything, I don’t mean titles.

Even matches.

In fact Venus’ last victory on the WTA circuit was in June 2021, more than a year and a half ago when she won a round at Wimbledon.

Add the fact that since September 2019, Venus has won just four WTA level matches and you are looking at a stunning record for someone who has won Grand Slam titles in the past.

With Williams now kick-starting another season as a 1000th-ranked player, it remains to be seen if she can get past her 114th-ranked opponent, a qualifier, and notch up a rare victory.

Volynets Makes it Through the Qualifiers

It took Volynets bit of good fortune to make it through to the main draw of this competition after 1/2 favourite Eugenie Bouchard withdrew from their second qualifying round because of fitness concerns.

This was after Volynets had gotten past Katrina Scott in a well-fought encounter, coming back from a set down to win the match.

Last year, Volynets made most of her appearances on the ITF circuit, with just two wins on the WTA circuit punctuating her climb from 180th to 109th. She ended the year ranked 114th and will now hope she can break into the top 100 for the first time and a result of that begin directly qualifying for at least the Grand Slams.

Can she break into the second round with a win over a player 19 years her senior?

Williams v Volynets Prediction and Tip

No surprises that Venus Williams is NOT the favourite here. For a player who has won nothing in 2022 and barely anything since 2019, it is a surprise she is as short as 17/10 to win this. Backing Volynets to come through.
