Cecchinato Ends 2022 Strongly on the Challenger Tour

Cecchinato has won three career senior titles, although the last of those victories came nearly four years ago in Cordoba, Argentina.

He has appeared in two finals subsequent to that, but finished on the losing side each time.

However, he did enjoy a late run on  the Challenger tour in 2022, winning events in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro.

Like many Italians, he is primarily a clay court player, and does not enjoy the same level of results on other surfaces.

The first Sicilian to win an ATP title, he was ranked as high as 16 in the world in 2019, and reached the last four of the French Open a year earlier, his best showing to date in a Grand Slam event.

He has spent the off-season training with Carlos Alcaraz in Spain, but still found time, just before Christmas, to fit in his wedding to his long-term partner Gaia.

Basilashvili Free to Concentrate on Tennis Again

Basilashvili reached the final of the Qatar Open last February, before losing to Roberto Batuista-Agut, but that was the highlight of a season that continued to be dominated by the domestic abuse charges he was facing back in Georgia. Had he been found guilty, he was facing up to three years in jail.

The fact that he was eventually cleared not only came as a huge relief to him, but also means that he can concentrate on his tennis again.

And that means that he will want to add to his tally in 2023 of five career titles, the last of which came at the Bavarian Championship in May 2021.

His last competitive appearance was in a Challenger event in France in November, where he reached the last eight.

However, he does have injury concerns. Towards the back end of last season, it was revealed that he was suffering from a long standing elbow injury, and, despite undergoing surgery to fix the problem in 2020, the pain was getting worse. He may need another operation sooner rather than later unless the issue resolves itself.
