Fernandez Eyes A Big Year Ahead

The explosive Leylah Fernandez will begin her 2022 campaign in Auckland on Monday.

It will be her first main draw appearance in Auckland after she failed to qualify for the tournament in 2020.

Fernandez, who shot to limelight by making the U.S. Open finals in 2021, went 21-15 from all levels last year.

The 20-year-old World no. 40, who won her maiden tour title in Monterrey two years ago, had defended it last season by beating Camilia Osorio in the final.

Those two titles remain her only two WTA titles. She also finished runner-up on two occasions, one of which was at the U.S. Open in 2021.

The left-handed Fernandez missed out on Wimbledon and a few other tournaments after she suffered a fractured foot during her quarterfinal match at the French Open.

It was the first time that she had reached the last eight at Roland Garros and just the second time at a major, but the injury didn’t help her cause as she went down to Martina Trevisan.

She struggled on return from injury though, winning consecutive matches in just one of her last seven tournaments.

Can she begin the new year on a better note? There are huge expectations from her following the run at the U.S. Open. If she starts well in Auckland and stay healthy throughout, she could produce some big results in 2023.

Fruhvirtova More at Home on Clay

Last year it was Linda Fruhvirtová, who made an impression on the tour. This year, it could be her younger sister Brenda Fruhvirtová making waves as the 15-year-old opens her season in Auckland.

Brenda has a career-high ITF Junior ranking of No. 4, which she achieved in December 2021.

She made her tour debut in Guadalajara last year by qualifying for the main draw, but lost the opener to Sloane Stephens in straight sets.

She will now be playing her second tour-level match on Monday.

Ranked no. 132nd in the world, the 15-year-old was terrific at the ITF level last season, reaching eight finals and winning all the titles.

But all of Brenda’s titles came on clay court. In Auckland she will be tested on hard courts.

Fernandez v Fruhvirtova Prediction and Tip

Fernandez is more experienced and a far superior player on hard courts. It will be interesting to see if Fruhvirtova can put up a challenge. But the Canadian should race past her opponent in no time.
