Jack Draper v Soonwoo Kwon Head to Head

42-ranked Jack Draper has not faced off against Soonwoo Kwon before this.

Draper Makes Top 50 Debut

With a top-50 year-end ranking, Jack Draper’s rise is now starting to take shape. He won 43 matches at all levels in 2022, including an astonishing 24 from a possible 28 on the Challenger Tour.

Draper was the Challenger Tour’s man of the hour in the first four months of the season where he won four titles – all on indoor hard courts.

Having garnered all the momentum and giving his ranking a huge bump, Draper became an ATP Tour mainstay in the second half of the season. There was a quarterfinal on home soil in Eastbourne, and a maiden Masters 1000 quarterfinal in Montreal.

Those results earned him a ticket to Milan to compete at the Next Gen ATP Finals. He ticked off the year with a semifinal run in that event, losing to eventual winner Brandon Nakashima.

Kwon Defeats Daniel In Qualifying

Soonwoo Kwon came through a scruffy match against Taro Daniel in the final round of qualifying to earn his berth in the main draw in Adelaide. Kwon is playing in this event for the second year in a row, but his ranking was too low to meet the cut-off entry for direct main draw participation

The South Korean humbled Dominic Thiem in his first qualifying match 6-4 6-1, but was run close by Daniel in a match that lasted precisely three hours.

Kwon did not manage to break the Japanese man’s serve throughout the match but still came out on top in a 7-6 4-6 7-6 win. While on the balance of play the South Korean probably deserved it, he will have to recover from a physically draining match in just under 24 hours.

Draper v Kwon Prediction and Tip

It will be interesting to see how Kwon will fare physically in this match after expending too much energy in his dogfight against Daniel. But then again, Draper is playing his first match of the season, and we cannot gauge where his level is at. So do not be surprised if the South Korean makes life problematic for the Briton.
