Sloane Stephens v Rebeka Masarova Head to Head

Former Auckland champion Stephens has not faced off against Masarova on the WTA Tour.

Stephens Holds Fond Memories of Auckland

Sloane Stephens won the 2016 ASB Classic in Auckland, dropping just one set all tournament. The event was synonymous for a washed-out final day in which Stephens was forced to complete her semifinal match and the final on the same day.

It was also the same year Stephens suffered a foot injury that kept her out for a year, before returning to shockingly win the 2017 US Open.

Stephens went 18-17 for the 2022 season, but there were good memories to draw upon from the year. She won her first title in nearly four years in Guadalajara last February, beating Marie Bouzkova in a gripping final.

There was also a surprise run to the quarterfinals of the French Open and at the second Guadalajara tournament towards the end year where she also made the last eight. Aside from that, there were a handful of lowlights such as losing five straight matches between Miami and Strasbourg.

Masarova Dispatches Errani to Qualify

Rebeka Masarova came through qualifying, beating Katherine Sebov of Canada and the experienced Italian Sara Errani, without dropping a set over the weekend.

Her levels against Errani were impressive and should give her the foundation to mimic a similar performance against former Auckland champion Stephens.

Masarova required just 69 minutes to knock off the 35-year-old Errani, winning 6-2 6-3. She broke Errani’s deteriorating serve four times in the match. She also saved two of three break points on her own delivery.

Masarova failed to win a single main draw match on the WTA Tour in 2022 in four tries, can she end her dismal run against the inconsistent Sloane Stephens?

Stephens v Masarova Prediction and Tip

Stephens is generally inconsistent, but Masarova doesn’t quite match up to the American’s power and placement of her shots. The former champion should make a winning start on her return to Auckland.
