Elias Ymer v Maximilian Marterer Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before on the senior tour, Ymer winning in three sets in Stockholm in 2018.

However, Marterer has won all three of their matches on the Challenger and Futures tours.

Ymer Reached Semi-Final in Pune Last Year

Elias is the older, and, in terms of tennis results, less successful of the Ymer siblings, and his performances tend to be overshadowed by that of his younger brother, Mikael.

And it was perhaps fitting that, it was with his brother, that he achieved the biggest title of his career, when they won the doubles at their home event in Stockholm in 2016.

Highlights of 2022 included reaching a final on the Challenger tour in Parma, finishing runner-up to the Croat Borna Coric.

And, in this event a year ago, he beat Aslan Karatsev, his only win over a top 20 player in his career, and  hewent on to reach his maiden semi-final.

Despite those exploits, he was still made to qualify in Pune this year, although he had some fortune in his first match when his opponent Miljan Zekic of Croatia was forced to retire injured.

There was no luck, though, involved in his subsequent straight sets defeat of Yuki Bhambri of India.

Marterer’s Oscillating Form

Marterer has had his struggles with form over the years, once being ranked as high as 45 in the world, before a sustained poor run saw him drop out of the top 400.

It has been a long and hard climb back from that, but 2022 gave signs that that he may yet become a top player.

He qualified for the Australian Open, and, after a three year absence, did the same at Wimbledon, and won his first Grand Slam match there, beating Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia in the first round.

The German also qualified for the US Open.

Another player made to enter the qualifying competition in Pune, he was pushed close in his first match by the Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran, only winning the first set on a tie-break, and then dropping the second, before regrouping to win the match.

However, he then enjoyed a more comfortable straight sets victory over the Serb world number 231, Nikola Milojevic.

Ymer v Marterer Prediction and Tip

Ymer will begin this match as favourite because of his recent history in the tournament, but, because of his previous results against the German, he will need to respect the threat posed by Marterer.
