Sebastian Baez v Pedro Martinez Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between them, of which one came on the Challenger circuit and another at the 2022 Santiago Open final. Baez won the Challenger match while Martinez clinched his maiden title in Santiago.

Incidentally this will be the first time they face off on clay.

Baez Coming off an Opening Bye

It’s been nearly a week since the new tennis season started and Baez will be among those who will be playing his first match on day seven of it.

After getting a first round bye, Baez will hope he can kick-start the year on a winning note after having had a 2022 to remember.

Last year, the Argentine not only won his maiden ATP title but also hit his career-best ranking of 31 in the world. In doing so, he was seeded for the first time at Wimbledon having not even qualified to play for the US Open the previous season.

The other end of the spectrum is Baez’s issues on surfaces other than clay. While he is quite easily at his most comfortable on the red dirt, Baez’s struggles on hardcourt surfaces are well-chronicled and that can be seen from the manner in which he won just six from the 18 matches he played on them in 2022.

Can he turn that record around this season?

Martinez Scrapes Past Ramanathan

Ramkumar Ramanathan is ranked outside of the top 400 in the world but with the kind of home support he had in Pune, it was no surprise he managed to give Martinez a run for his money.

Well that, and the fact that like Baez, Martinez loves his time on clay and isn’t too fond of hardcourt tournaments.

Much like Baez, Martinez won his maiden title in 2022 and that came on clay. And quite similarly, he finished the last season on a hardcourt win-loss record of 7-12.

Against Ramanathan, Martinez needed to overcome the loss of the first set before winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 30 minutes to seal his second round berth.

Things could be slightly different against Baez though given how both players have their issues on this surface and that could make this an interesting tussle.

Baez v Martinez Prediction and Tip

Nothing to choose between the two and we expect this to go all the way into the third set. Baez with a teeny-weeny edge for us.
