Karatsev Eases Past Andujar

After the kind of season Karatsev had in 2022, his opening victory over Pablo Andujar would have been a great relief.

Not too often do you find a player enter a season ranked 18th in the world, improve to 14th and then end the year 59th but that’s exactly how Karatsev’s year went in 2022.

Plus there were off-court challenges that he needed to deal with, so much so that after winning the Sydney International and reaching the third round at Australian Open, Karatsev won just 12 matches all season and lost 31.

So for him to cruise through to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Pablo Andujar in a match lasting a mere 63 minutes would have come as a huge relief.

The question now is if he can continue with the same kind of form he showed against his Spanish opponent in the first round when he faces the highly talented van Rijthoven.

Not Too Tough for van Rijthoven against Albot

While van Rijthoven was on court for an hour and 27 minutes in his opening round encounter, he managed to come through in straight sets to book his second round spot.

The Dutchman, who has never seen the inside of the top 100 rankings, registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Radu Albot to seal his place alongside Karatsev.

Van Rijthoven broke his opponent twice in the encounter, once in each set, finish things off. He also faced two break-points in the contest but saved both of them easily to come through.

Coming off a season that saw van Rijthoven jump from being 261st in the world to 101st at one stage, he will now look to go deeper into this competition, in turn attempting to break into the top 100 for the first time in his career.

Karatsev v van Rijthoven Prediction and Tip

Karatsev starts off a 3/5 favourite and if his performance in the first round is anything to go by, those are good odds to go with. That said, van Rijthoven could be a completely different kettle of fish on hard court surfaces as compared to Andujar and we could see a keen battle here.
