Novak Djokovic v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

Seven matches played and Djokovic has won all seven. Five of these seven have come on hardcourt surfaces, including one at the Australian Open in 2019 and the Shanghai Masters and Paris Masters that very year.

Djokovic Made to Work by Lestienne

There was no doubting who the bookmakers thought was the overwhelming favourite going into the second round match between Djokovic and Constant Lestienne but the latter made the 21-time Grand Slam winner work for his victory.

It took Djokovic nearly two hours to come through in his 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) win over his French opponent after having conceded a break of serve in the very second game of the encounter.

Down 0-3 in the match, Djokovic slowly found his rhythm and just as Lestienne was about to serve for the set at 5-3, broke him to love. He then raced off to a 5-0 lead in the tie-breaker before easing to the lead.

Lestienne continued to make life difficult for the Serb in the second set too with his grit and determination, even managing to save two match-points in the 10th game there. In the tie-breaker that followed though, Djokovic converted the first match-point he got to come through in straight sets.

Can he now make it eight wins in a row after having ended the previous season with a five-match winning streak at the ATP Finals?

Shapovalov Tames Safiullin in Second Round

Having been taken to three sets by the 164th-ranked Rinky Hijikata in the first round, Shapovalov bounced back in style to carve out a straight-set win in the second round.

The Canadian, who ended the previous season with a 22-12 win-loss record in outdoor hardcourt tournaments, completed a 6-4, 6-3 win over Roman Safiullin to continue from where he had left off towards the end of last year. He was a finalist at the Seoul Open and a semifinalist in Tokyo at the last two tournaments he featured in.

The only time Shapovalov looked a tad jittery was when he lost his serve in the first set but even by then he had already broken his opponent twice.

He recovered quickly to never face a break-point again and completed the win in an hour and 22 minutes.

Can he now test the in-form former world number one?

Djokovic v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Djokovic might have been tested in the second round but there is nothing to suggest he won’t get back to his clinical ways again. Expecting an easy win for the Serb.
