Ons Jabeur v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between the two.

Jabeur Sees Off Cirstea

Top seed Ons Jabeur is off to a winning start in 2023.

The Tunisian, who had a first-round bye, was given a tough fight by Sorana Cirstea in the first set of their second round match on Thursday. However, once she clinched the set in the tiebreak, she cruised to victory by taking the second in just 26 minutes.

Jabeur, ranked no. 2nd in the world, went up a break twice in the first set but each time Cirstea succeeded in pulling the break back.

However, the Tunisian was in complete control of the tiebreak and then broke the world no. 45 twice in the second to win the one hour and 17 minute match 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

The 28-year-old Jabeur, who was a runner-up at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year, had an excellent 48-17 run in 2022.

In addition to the two Grand Slam finals, she also featured in four other finals, winning just two of them — her first WTA 1000 in Madrid and her maiden WTA 500 in Berlin.

In all, she now has three WTA titles from 10 finals, but 2023 seems to be the year that could see her close the gap between wins and losses in the finals. Can it all start in Adelaide? She is already in the quarterfinal and is the favourite to move into the final four on Friday.

Kostyuk Wins Another Three-Setter

Facing Jabeur will be World no. 69 Marta Kostyuk, who is coming off two tough three-set wins in the tournament.

The Ukrainian, who qualified for the main draw with back-to-back straight sets wins over Spain’s Cristina Bucșa and Egypt’s Mayar Sherif respectively, needed two hours and six minutes to beat Australia’s Jaimee Fourlis in the first round.

She then stunned Elena Rybakina in a three set second-round encounter on Wednesday. The Kazakh player had edged the first set in the tiebreak, but Kostyuk hit back in the second with two breaks of serve. With the match tied at one-set apiece, Rybakina then went up a break in the first game of the third set, but Kostyuk got it back immediately and then broke Rybakina’s next service game as well to take a 4-1 lead.

She didn’t look back again in the contest, beating the Wimbledon champion 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3.

In the first round, the 20-year-old had beaten Fourlis 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

Jabeur v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Jabeur was excellent last year and she seems to have picked up from where she left. It will be difficult for Kostyuk to match the quality of Jabeur in the quarterfinal, but her morale will be high after the second round win over Rybakina. However, the Tunisian should still go through without much fuss.
