Victoria Azarenka has got her 2023 campaign off to a great start. The Belarusian, who defeated Anhelina Kalinina in a draining two-set contest in the first round, needed just an hour and 40 minutes to beat promising Chinese player Qinwen Zheng in the second round on Thursday.
Azarenka broke Zheng twice in the first set and won four games in a row to wrap up the opening set. However, the world no. 28 made it tough for the Belarusian in the second set. Zheng broke early to lead 0-2. Azarenka responded with an immediate break and then broke a second time in the final game of the set for a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Zheng, who had last year become the first Chinese teenager to break into the top 30 in the world, served 10 aces to just one from Azarenka. However, she made a number of unforced errors in the match. Azarenka had 11 break points and she converted 4 of them. Zheng only had two break points and she could convert just one.
In the first round, Azarenka had seen off Kalinina in two tiebreaks. In the first set, she fought back from 1-5 down to take a one-set-to-love lead. In the second, both players broke each other twice before Azarenka edged the tiebreak.
Ranked no. 26th in the world, the 33-year-old had reached the only semifinal of 2022 in her last tournament in Guadalajara in October. Can she begin 2023 by making the semifinal in Adelaide?

Noskova’s Surprise Run Continues
After shocking third seed Daria Kasatkina in the first round, qualifier Linda Noskova continued her run in the tournament with a straight sets drubbing of Claire Liu on Thursday that put her in the last eight of the tournament.
The 18-year-old faced two break points in the match and she saved both of them. In contrast, Liu faced five of them, getting broken four ties in the match.
Ranked no. 102, Noskova dominated both the sets to knock out the World no. 59. It was the second higher-ranked player that the Czech beat in the first two rounds.
Noskova had ousted the world no. 8 Kasatkina 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 in a two-hour-and-30-minute first-round contest.
She had made it to the main draw with a come-from-behind win over Anna Kalinskaya in the first qualifying round and a straight sets win over Anastasia Potapova in the second qualifying round.

Having dealt with a promising youngster in the second round, the veteran Azarenka faces another up-and-coming talent in the quarterfinal. The Czech is expected to test the Belarusian but eventually experienced Azarenka should cruise into the semifinals.
