Kokkinakis Loves Playing in Australia

Kokkinakis enjoys playing on home soil.

Last year in Adelaide he won his first senior singles title, beating Arthur Rinderknech of France in the final in three sets, and, a few weeks later, with his friend and partner Nick Kyrgios, he won the doubles at the Australian Open.

The pair would also go on to claim the title in Atlanta.

At the end of the season, Kokkinakis was part of the Australian team that finished runners-up to Canada in the Davis Cup final in Malaga.

The defence of his title last week began with a straight sets defeat of the American Maxime Cressy, both thanks to tie-breaks.

However, the world number 15, Jannik Simmer of Italy, ensured there would be no repeat of last year’s heroics, defeating him in straight sets.

Popyrin Reached Adelaide Quarter-Final Last Week

When Popyrin won his first senior title in Singapore nearly two years ago, it seemed like he was destined for the very top, but struggles with form and consistency mean that his early promise has not yet been fulfilled.

However, he is still young, and, if the evidence of last week in Adelaide is any guide, he seems determined to make amends for lost time.

Forced to qualify, he then pulled off one of the big shocks on 2023 so far, by dumping the second set, and world number six, Felix Augur-Aliassime, out of the tournament in straight sets.

Then he created another minor surprise by coming from a set down to defeat the world number 61, Marcos Giron in three sets.

He may have regrets though, about his quarter-final defeat to Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan.

After conceding the first set, he saved a match point in the second and won the subsequent tie-break. However, Nishioka proved too strong for him in the third.

Kokkinakis v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Kokkinakis may just have too much power on serve for his younger compatriot, but both will enjoy playing in front of the Adelaide crowd.
