Paolini Looking for First Win of the Season

Paolini reached her second senior WTA career final in 2022. However, whilst she had lifted the trophy at the Slovenia Open the previous year, she had to be content with the runners-up cheque at the Transylvania Open in Romania, with Anna Blinkova claiming the main spoils.

She did, though, add a Challenger tournament win to her collection, beating the Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl in their final in Spain.

Other highlights of her campaign included defeating Aryan Sabalenka in Indian Wells, the first time in her career that she had beaten a top ten ranked player.

This will only be her third match since beating Baindl.

She lost her one match playing for Italy in the Billie-Jean Cup to Belinda Bencic in November, and then, last week, she lost in a three set battle to Anna Bondar of Hungary in the qualifying competition for Adelaide.

Tig Making Comeback After Injury Lay-Off

In September 2020, Tig was ranked as high as 56 in the world, having just won her first senior WTA title, the Istanbul Cup, where she beat Eugenie Bouchard in three sets in the final.

She had finished runner-up in two previous finals.

However, midway through the following season she suffered the injury that was to keep her out of action for more than a year, and send her world ranking tumbling in the process.

It was not until last September that she made her belated reappearance on the ITF circuit, and marked her return by winning a clay court event in Bulgaria.

The Romanian would go on to teach the semi-final and the final of two more tournaments on clay, both in Turkey, before ending her season to concentrate on her fitness.

Tig will play the Australian Open courtesy of her Protected Ranking, and this will be her first match back on the senior tour in preparation for that.

Paolini v Tig Prediction and Tip

Tig won their previous encounter in totally convincing fashion, but that was before her long injury lay-off, and she is still working her way back to full fitness. That gives the Italian the edge in this match.
