Tatjana Maria v Talia Gibson Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 35 year old German, and her teenage opponent, seventeen years younger.

Maria has won four WTA singles titles, but, with the last of those coming in 2019 in Korea, commentators were entitled to think that the German’s best years were behind her.
However, she defied all expectations by reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year, beating both Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko in the process, before finally losing in three sets to Ons Jabeur.
It was her misfortune that her achievement did not earning her the ranking points she would normally have earned from such a run.
Her best result after that came in Seoul, where she got to the semi-finals again, this time going down at the hands of Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The 35 year old did not make the best start to 2023, however, losing in her opening match in Auckland to Coco Gauff in straight sets.

Teenage Australian Gibson
18 year old Gibson ended 2022 by reaching her highest ranking in both singles and doubles, and her ambitions for the new campaign are to go higher in both.
Last year saw Gibson’s breakthrough on the ITF circuit, reaching five singles finals, winning three of them, most recently on home soil in July in Caloundre. And she also added four doubles titles to her CV, the last of which again came in Australia, this time in Playford in October.
Her new year, though, did not start so well with an opening defeat to Darya Astahhova, the world number 205, in an ITF event in Canberra.
Playing Maria is a step-up in class in terms of her usual opponent.

Although Gibson will have nothing to lose, and will have home crowd backing, Maria is too experienced an operator to let that bother her, and she should win with ease.
