Quentin Halys v Ben Shelton Head to Head

It will be a first meeting between the two.

Halys Powers Past Molcan

Quentin Halys struck 20 aces as he powered past Alex Molcan in straight sets on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old Frenchman, who won three titles from seven Challenger finals in 2022, needed just 54 minutes to dispatch the player from Slovak Republic 6-3, 6-4.

Halys wasn’t broken in the match, as he saved the only break point that he faced in the final game of the first set. He himself had three opportunities to break Molcan’s serve and he succeeded in breaking once in each set.

This was Halys’ second win of the season. He had earlier beaten Jordan Thompson in the first round in Adelaide last week, but fell in the second round to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

While Halys has found quite a lot of success at the lower level, he is still inexperienced at the top level and a 3-11 tour-level record in 2022 is a reflection of that. Overall, he went 58-27 with most of his success coming in indoor tournaments.

Having got off to a good start in Auckland, he will be eager to make the last eight by winning the big-serving battle on Wednesday.

Shelton Shocks Baez

The extremely impressive Ben Shelton picked his first win of the year on Tuesday as he stunned seventh seed Sebastian Baez in the first round of the Auckland Open.

The American left-hander struck nine aces, saved both the break points that he faced on his serve and won 82% points on the back of his first delivery to win the one-hour-and-24-minute contest 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.

Shelton, who turned pro only last year, has been awarded a wild card for the tournament. He had 10 breaking opportunities in the match and he took three of them, all in the second set.

Shelton featured in the qualifying round in Adelaide, losing to James Duckworth in the first qualifying round. He is coming off a brilliant 2022 which saw him clinch three titles from six finals.

On the tour, he made an impression at the Cincinnati Masters last year, defeating Lorenzo Sonego and Casper Ruud before falling to Camerion Norrie in the Round of 16.

He was one of the biggest movers in the rankings last year. When the year started, he was ranked no. 573rd in the world, but finished 2022 as world no. 96. Currently he is sitting on a career-high ranking of 92 and will be hoping to reach a maiden quarterfinal on the tour on Wednesday.

Halys v Shelton Prediction and Tip

It’s a matchup between two players who have taken giant strides over the last one year. Both did extremely well at Challenger level and broke into the top 100. Both also had unexpected start in the tournament and now look to build on that. It will be an interesting contest between the two big servers.

Halys will hold slight edge in the contest. He is more experienced at the top level and has looked good in all three of his matches so far. The only one he lost was against Djokovic in Adelaide and there too he made the world no. 5 work hard for the victory.
