Davidovich Fokina opened his new season with a very strong win over Brandon Nakashima who had a breakout year last year. Davidovich Fokina has been a solid player for a while but his level can be all over the place as he struggles to find consistency.
The win over Nakashima showed a new maturity to his game which could be useful moving forward. He has all the right weapons but just needs to find a way to blend them well.
It’s a good start but it doesn’t get any easier as a native player awaits.
John Millman never beat Fokina before but he’ll be motivated to do so while playing at home.

Three Wins for Millman
John Millman is already up to three match wins in the new year as he started it off in Adelaide. The qualifiers in the first week ended in Q1 as he lost to Vasek Pospisil.
The second week brought him his first wins and he’s up to three wins so far.
The first one was over Zapata Mirallas, the second one was over Christopher O’Connell and the first main draw win was over Albert Ramos-Vinolas. He’s been finding his form recently and it’s been working out well. Millman is a counter-puncher which technically should work well against Fokina.
He’ll need to produce a very high level because Fokina can attack very precisely and he’s really quick around the court so he’ll be on every ball.
It’s a big match for Millman as he looks to rebuild his ranking after a down year last year.

I think this is a match Fokina should win but I could see a way by which Millman could keep it close. I do expect the over to hit but I also think Fokina will win in the end.
