Tommy Paul played his first match in 2023 and it was a win for the American. Taking on native player Christopher O’Connell, Paul was able to play a balanced match taking it 6-4 7-5. The American has high hopes of this new season and this was a good start.
Australia will be decent for him because it suits him well. A powerful serve, strong groundstrokes and very little doubt in how to approach tennis. All of that will be well suited on the quick courts of Australia. He’s done well in the past here but getting a few more matches in before the Australian Open will be crucial.
O’Connell was a good test but nothing like Draper who has already played some very good tennis this year.
These are players that will battle in the next decade on the Tour and it will be interesting to see who wins this first one. Paul has the game to beat Draper.

Draper Keeps Winning
Jack Draper has been playing tennis for a few weeks now and the Brit is certainly in peak shape. He’s had some amazing wins already but his consistency has been a bit worrisome. It’s not as stable as it was last year which is fine as it’s the start of the year.
He shouldn’t allow it to become a habit because that will hamper his career quite a bit. A win over Sonego was impressive as the Italian is capable of some crazy tennis but he’ll need to follow that up against Paul. The American has weapons that can hurt Draper so he’ll need to be on his best in this one.
If he wins, he’ll earn a 3rd win this year and that’s going to give him confidence ahead of the Australian. The serve has been crucial for his win and he’ll need that once more.
The forehand has been okay but it can misfire at the wrong times. Paul will put pressure on him so he’ll need to handle that well.
Paul v Draper Prediction and Tip
Despite being the underdog I think Draper is actually closer to victory. He’s played more, his game generally seems more stable and I’ll trust him to get it done. I don’t think it will come smoothly do.
