Lucky Loser Wang Takes Advantage of Good Fortune

Wang was actually beaten in the second round of qualifying for Hobart by the Spaniard, Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, losing in straight sets, but she earned a reprieve and second chance as a Lucky Loser, earning herself a place in the main draw anyway.

Fortune then shone on her a second time, because her first round opponent, Olivia Gadecki of Australia, the world number 200, was not the most taxing she might have faced.

It was Wang who engineered the first break of the match, but the Australian, to her credit, recovered it, only to immediately be broken  again. Wang was able to serve out for the first set.

The opening four games of the second set went against serve, and then Gadecki fell a break behind again.

Wang served for the match, only to be broken in turn, but, before the Australian could celebrate, she promptly dropped her own serve once more.

Wang then saved three more break points before finally claiming victory.

Van Uytvanck Overcomes Linette in Tight Match

Having won both her matches playing for Belgium in the United Cup last week, van Uytvanck was keen to carry that form into the individual arena in Hobart, and she will be pleased with her opening round victory over Magda Linette of Poland, the world number 46, even if she did suffer a dip in the middle of the match.

The match began with both women dropping serve, but then Linette was broken again and the Belgian was able to close out the set, despite saving three break back points.

Linette, though, seized the initiative with an early break in the second set, and then broke once more, taking the set for the loss of just one game.

The third set saw fortunes fluctuate wildly. Linette dropped her serve, but then went a break up and had the match in her grasp, only to let it slip.

Not only did van Uytvanck break her to love to level the match, but she allowed the same thing to happen on her next service game with devastating consequences because that handed the Belgian victory.

Wang v Van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip

Van Uytvanck was hardly convincing in her victory over Linette, but she will still start favourite against the Lucky Loser who made hard work of beating a woman ranked more than 100 places below her.
