Mikael Ymer v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before in qualifying for Auckland three years ago, Ymer winning in straight sets.

Ymer Wins Scandinavian Battle

Ymer had to come through qualifying in Adelaide this week, getting past Nikoloz Basilashvili after the Georgian was forced to retire from their match with injury, and then defeating the local man Jordan Thompson.

But he made sure that effort was worthwhile with a hard fought victory over the Finn Emil Ruusuvouri, the world number 46.

In a first set largely dominated by serve, Ruusuvouri was the first to face a break point.

He saved that one, but, in his next service game, he came under prolonged pressure and was finally broken, allowing Ymer to claim the first set.

The Finn saved another break point midway through the second set and then broke the Swede next game, consolidating his advantage to level the match.

It was Ymer, though, who was the next to break, early in the third set, only for Ruusuvouri to level again. No soon, though, had the Finn got the match back on serve, when he dropped his serve once more.

This time there was to be no let-off as Ymer closed out the match.

McDonald Advances at the Expense of Evans

McDonald reached the second round in Adelaide last week, and now he has emulated that feat by beating Dan Evans of Great Britain in straight sets.

Evans, the world number 27, began the match badly, dropping his serve in the opening game, but he hit back to level straight away.

Parity did not last long, and McDonald soon found himself a break up again and it was not long before he had the chance to serve for the set.

Evans then responded with another break, but before there was time to even think a tie-break, he immediately dropped his serve again, and this time the American was able to serve out.

When Evans broke early in the second set he appeared like he had found his way into the match.

He had a set point, could not take it and paid the ultimate price as he was broken twice more in successive service games.

That gave McDonald the chance to seal the win, which he did on his second match point.

Ymer v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Given that Ymer won the only previous match between the pair, he will start favourite for this match but it is likely to be close.

Both will be looking for early season encouragement ahead of the Australian Open.
