Cameron Norrie v Marcos Giron Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both players have won one apiece.

The first of those came at the Washington Open in 2021 and Norrie had carved out a straight-set win there. This was followed by another straight-set win but this time for Giron in Vienna last year.

Giron Too Good for Wolf

While he did not start off as a favourite, Giron proved to be too good for JJ Wolf in their second round encounter. Giron was on court for an hour and 34 minutes to make it to the quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Giron eked out a 6-4, 6-4 win as he romped to one break of serve in each of the two sets.

He also faced a couple of break-points but saved both of them easily and while he did fritter away seven of his own opportunities, Giron managed to get past his opponent’s serve when it mattered the most.

Interestingly, both breaks came in the ninth games of the two sets.

Giron had earlier needed three sets to get past Federico Coria in the opening round. Can he make it to the quarterfinals here after having featured in three tournaments in the Australian Open Swing last year and won no match?

Norrie Stutters in Lehecka Win

After getting a first round bye and having started the season off with three successive wins at the United Cup, there weren’t too many ready to bet against Norrie in his second round encounter against the 78th-ranked Jiri Lehecka.

And after Norrie had won the opening set and had three break-points to go 3-2 up in the second, it looked like the Brit was living up to the 3/10 favourite odds on offer for him.

Only that Lehecka managed to hang on to hope, pushed the second set into a tie-breaker and then clinched it off his third set-point.

Fortunately for Norrie, he earned himself an early break of serve in the decider that helped him scrape through to a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3 win over his opponent in two hours and 38 minutes.

With four wins in a row under his belt now, Norrie should not have a trouble coming into this one but given how close this match is to the start of the Australian Open, one wonders if his heart will be in it.

Norrie v Giron Prediction and Tip

Norrie has said in the past he is looking to make it count at the Grand Slam level and that could be a factor coming into this quarterfinal encounter that will be played about four days before the start of the Australian Open. He wouldn’t want to expend a lot of energy here and as a result we are tilting towards a Giron win in this one.
