Pablo Carreno Busta v Pedro Cachin Head to Head

Interestingly Cachin has won both their previous meetings. One of them was at the tour level in 2019 which Cachin won after Carreno Busta retired. The Spaniard was up by a set in that match.

Cachin’s other win came at a lower level tournament in 2015. Both those meetings were on clay court.

Carreno Busta Is Coming Off a Solid 2022

World no. 15 Pablo Carreno Busta got his 2023 season off on a disappointing note as he went down to Kwon Soon-woo in the second round of Adelaide International-2. Seeded second in the tournament, the Spaniard had a first-round bye. He won the first set against Kwon but was beaten by the South Korean in the next two sets.

Carreno Busta will be hoping to put the disappointment behind him quickly and begin his Australian Open campaign with a win.

A two-time semifinalist at the U.S. Open, the Spaniard has never gone past the fourth round in Melbourne major. Last year, it was the third time in his ninth attempt that he reached the Round of 16 at the Australian Open, however couldn’t reach the last eight after falling to Matteo Berrettini in straight sets.

The 31-year-old, who has won seven titles over his career, had a 37-25 record in 2022, which included his first-ever Masters 1000 title in Toronto. He also reached the final in Barcelona, only to finish runner-up in the tournament.

He will be hoping to shake off the slow start to the year by making a good start in Melbourne.

Cachin to Make Debut in Melbourne

Pedro Cachin will be making his debut at the Australian Open. The 27-year-old made his Grand Slam debut last year, reaching the second round at the French Open and the third round at the U.S. Open.

A clay court specialist, Cachin has barely played on surfaces other than his preferred surface. He has reached 35 finals in Challenger and ITF Futures tournaments combined and all of them have been on clay. He has a 6-4 record in Challenger finals and a 9-16 record in Futures finals.

Last year, the Argentine reached seven Challenger finals and won four of those titles. He also broke into the top 100 for the first time and peaked to a career-high of 54.

Currently ranked no. 59, Cachin has not had an ideal start to 2023. He lost his opening round match in Adelaide-1 to Karen Khachanov in straight sets and also lost his first round match in Auckland to Constant Lestienne. Cachin struggled in both of the two matches, winning just six games in the first match and four in the second.

Can he put up an improved performance in the first round in Melbourne?

Carreno Busta v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Carreno Busta is far more experienced and a much better player on the surface. Expect him to get off to a brisk start in the first round of the Australian Open.
